The Viper was initially conceived in late 1988 at Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studios and pitched to lead designer Tom Gale as a modern-day Cobra. Carroll Shelby drove a pre-production Viper as the pace vehicle in the 1991 Indianapolis 500 race. One year later, the Viper was released to the public. The appropriately named ACR, or American Club Racer, is built for the racetrack with a massive wing that lends about 2,000 pounds of downforce at top speed.
