The story of the 911 Targa begins after the United States had imposed stricter regulations on convertibles in the mid ’60’s due to rollover concerns. Named after the famous Targa Florio road race which Porsche was successful in, the initial short-wheelbase car featured a full, roll hoop, replacing the normal B-pillars. Finished in brushed aluminium, the Targa also featured a fold-down rear screen, providing a truly open-air experience.
After two short production years, Porsche abandoned the unique canvas rear window in the Targa and was replaced with glass. As the Targa model evolved over time, a fixed glass rear window had become the standard for Porsche. This style remained largely unchanged until the 993 generation in the mid 1990’s, when Porsche offered the 911 with an automatic glass top, which stored itself in the rear of the car.
Today, the early soft window models have now become more desirable as the design was only offered for two model years and has not been reproduced by Porsche. This 911 Targa on view was attractively factory-finished in Sand Beige over a Beige Leatherette interior, and was fitted with the optional wood steering wheel, bumper horns, and a desirable Becker Europa radio with loudspeaker and antenna installed.
