Nailed It: Traditional Lofting & Woodworking Techniques Used in Wooden Boat Building & Early Automobiles

Featuring:  Warren Barker, Senior Instructor in the Boatbuilding & Restoration Program at the IYRS School of Technology & Trades

Have you ever admired a classic wooden Herreshoff sailboat, Chris-Craft runabout, or Ford Deluxe woody wagon and wondered “How the heck did they make that?” Well, you’re in luck as Audrain Museum is proud to present the latest installment in our Seminar Series.

In this talk,  Warren Barker will highlight the tools and techniques used by students in restoring the wooden craft you will see in Restoration Hall and discuss the parallels in the process with early automobile coachwork.

6PM - 8PM | IYRS & Audrain Automobile Museum
*Doors open at 5:30PM*

The essential skills used to build wooden boats and early automobiles have many similarities. While new tools and technology have made certain parts of the job easier, two important aspects of restoration are wood selection and how it is worked by seasoned craftsmen. Like most skills, woodworking requires hundreds of hours of hands-on experience. The IYRS School of Technology and Trade is giving its students much-needed learning experiences right here in Newport.

IYRS was founded in 1993 as the International Yacht Restoration School on the Newport harbor front. It was originally founded to ensure the skills necessary to preserve and maintain traditional wooden boats would thrive. Now IYRS also encompasses new trades and technologies needed in modern maritime businesses.
