A Little History

In comparison to the other prominent manufacturers, Dodge was late to the pony car game, not releasing an official muscle car until this Challenger in 1970. It was offered as either a two-door hardtop or a convertible. Despite the fact that the car shares the same E-body platform as the 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda, also on display, buyers were able to make the car far more personalized. They could choose between the SE (Special Edition), the R/T (Road/Track), or the T/A (Trans Am) trim, like the one currently on display. Buyers also had the option to choose between 7 different engines, 4 different interior styles, and even different tire sizes for the front and rear tires. In fact, it was the only regular-production muscle car of the era to offer larger tires for the rear, giving it a downward-facing grille and far more aggressive appearance.

The Challenger was generally well-received by the public, but criticized by many as the muscle car fascination was already beginning to dwindle. As such, the Challenger SE, T/A, and R/T were only styles available for the 1970 model year. That was also the only year the car qualified for and competed in the SCCA Trans Am Racing Series. Driven by Sam Posey, the only Trans Am prepped car finished fourth overall.
