There was only one original Shelby GT500 Super Snake made in 1967. 50 examples of Carroll Shelby’s ultimate project Mustang were set to be built, but Ford cancelled the project after learning about production costs from Shelby, incidentally leading to one of the rarest Mustangs ever built. 

The one-off Super Snake was created in collaboration with Goodyear to help them market new “Thunderbolt” tires. Shelby set out to build a Mustang that could outperform all other cars on the road while wearing the Thunderbolt tires. The GT-40 powered Super Snake completed the marketing test pushing 170 MPH and retaining 97% of the Goodyear Thunderbolt’s tread. The car almost instantly reached legendary status, and sold at auction in January 2019 for over $2 million, making it the most expensive Mustang ever sold. 

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Super Snake, Shelby wanted to create another monster to pay homage to the one and only original. Donor 5.0 Mustangs were used to build the new Super Snakes, and almost everything under the skin was revised to make this Mustang the most capable one yet. 

Shelby’s goal was to build the most powerful, track focused Mustang possible, while retaining OEM feel and comfort on the street. The heart and soul of the Super Snake is the Shelby Performance supercharger, which raises horsepower to 750. An all new cooling system was integrated to maintain reliable power numbers, with a fully adjustable Shelby by Penske coilover suspension system and Brembo brakes to keep the beast on pavement.
