With Formula Junior’s growing success after its introduction by Lurani and early support from Italian manufacturers like Stanguellini, the three Maserati brothers, Bindo, Ettore and Ernesto, after selling out their interests in Maserati developed the OSCA brand. At first concentrating on small highly competitive sports cars, and support from excellent drivers like Guilio Cabianca and the British driver Colin Davis. They also produced a very few Formula One cars, one of which was driven by the Siamese driver Prince Bira.
As Formula Junior became more popular the brothers introduced the OSCA Tipo-J and some 15 examples were built. Colin Davis won the International Formula Junior Championship in an OSCA Tipo-J.. The little cars, like the Stanguellini were most attractive, following the lines of an earlier stunner the Formula One Maserati 250F. Formula Junior races were often run as support races for the Monaco Grand Prix in the 1960s.
The cars were imported into the US by Luigi Chinetti of NART fame. This car, chassis 013 was shipped directly from Italy to Mexico where it was purchased by the Quintanilla family for the initial championship race at Magdalena Mixiuhca, Mexico, driven by Miguel Quintanilla. In 1961 the car was shipped to the USA to race at Sebring in a 100-mile race before the Twelve hours of Sebring. The car was driven by the famous young Mexican ace Pedro Rodriguez who finished 12th. The current owner bought the car in Italy in 2005 and it was the restored under the supervision of Adolfo Orsi at Maserati. It then came to the United States in 2013.
