It is impossible to ignore the momentous influence the A80 Toyota Supra has imprinted on today’s car scene. Toyota’s first world-class sports car caught the car world off guard when it was released in 1993 and has since skyrocketed in popularity. Here in the States, it is perhaps the most recognizable and most sought-after car to come out of the 1990’s. Timeless looks, major movie appearances and incredible performance potential have placed the Supra on a pedestal for both collectors and tuners. This near-perfect example includes both the desirable Targa top and twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE engine and shows just 11,000 miles from new.
The A80 Supra was a futuristic car for Toyota in 1993. Visually compared to the previous generation A70 Supra, the A80 incorporated much smoother lines and modern touches, such as the projector headlights and large, rounded rear wing. The car was based on the Lexus SC chassis, though was 13 inches shorter in length. The overall design was attractively simple, with performance-focused touches that did not detract from the overall appearance. The interior of the A80 is completely driver-focused, with the entire dashboard aimed directly at the driver.
In 1993, the performance figures of the twin-turbo Supra were astonishing. The 3.0 Liter inline-six produced 320 horsepower; for reference, the latest generation A90 Supra with a 3.0 Liter inline-six produced 340 horsepower more than two decades after the release of the A80. The car had world-class handling along with great aerodynamics thanks to its slippery design and large rear wing. While the stock performance was nothing short of extraordinary in 1994, the ease of tuning the 2JZ engine allows the Supra to withstand over 1000 horsepower.
In 2001, Supra gained global superstardom after being driven by Paul Walker through the first Fast and the Furious movie. Young car enthusiasts were suddenly hypnotized by Japanese tuner cars, and the orange Supra seen in the movie became the poster child for tuner culture here in the States. It was Fast and the Furious that helped the public understand the Supra’s full performance potential. As tuners continued to push the boundaries of the 2JZ, it became clear that the engine was nearly indestructible. Massive turbochargers were becoming much more common, as were power figures well above the 800-horsepower range.
The Supra has become one of the most popular Japanese cars here in the States, with a strong fanbase due to its role in the Fast and the Furious along with its ease of tunability. While its popularity has soared, it has become increasingly difficult to find a collector-grade example as many Supras have been modified. As prices continue to skyrocket, it will be fascinating to see if modified examples, which are perhaps more popular globally than stock examples, will rise in value like the collector-grade cars.
