In its early history, the Schwinn Whizzer emerged as a pioneering innovation, transitioning from a kit to a complete bike and symbolizing 1940s ingenuity by offering affordable and enjoyable transportation in a novel manner. Since its establishment in 1895, Schwinn has stood as a global leader in bicycle manufacturing. However, it wasn't until the late 1930s that they ventured beyond traditional bicycle manufacturing.
That turning point came in 1939 with Breene-Taylor's introduction of the Whizzer Model D bicycle motor. Priced at $55, this comprehensive kit allowed bicycle owners to attach a powerful air-cooled, four-cycle engine, boasting 1.5 horsepower, to their bicycles.
As World War II erupted, Whizzer faced challenges but ultimately gained government approval to continue engine production by highlighting the Whizzer as essential transportation for defense workers. This led to the exclusive "New Model" engine designed solely for defense workers.
By 1949, Schwinn had fully embraced the motorized bicycle concept, launching the "Pacemaker" alongside higher-priced models like the Sportsman and the Ambassador. These models remained popular until the mid-1950s, collectively selling over 150,000 engines.
Breene-Taylor Engineering Corporation's initial Whizzer motor kits, priced at $54.95, marked the beginning of a transformative era. These kits, comprising an air-cooled, four-cycle engine, revolutionized biking by enabling motorized cruising.
Embraced as "America’s Finest Bicycle Motor," the Whizzer engines were predominantly retrofitted onto bicycles, with many finding a perfect fit on the robust Schwinn Cantilever frame. This early success led Whizzer to venture into motorbike production, but legal concerns prompted them to relinquish frame production to Schwinn, marking a crucial transition in their history.
The Schwinn Whizzer's legacy iconic WZ model, showcased the brand's early commitment to designing innovative motorbikes with modifications like reinforced frames for belt clearance, and enhanced braking systems. The Schwinn Whizzer and other motorized bicycles were the precursor to the moped and today’s popular electric bicycles!
